Hello! Welcome to Writing! Here I will be showcasing my writing achievements! For each document there will be a downloadable document to read on a separate program.
I decided to put this piece on here because it demonstrates that I can write an article using pre-determined prompts. I think that I liked doing this piece a lot because I love Japanese culture, and enjoy writing about it. I also enjoyed using a Tech Tool my teacher gave us to use which translated our name into Chinese. I used this tool for "my" name and "my" mother's name.
R - Young woman samurai named グレーシー (gureeshii)
A - Her mother
F - Letter
T - Writing about how much she loves her mother before she goes into battle
Dear モム (momu),
I love you so much. You are as beautiful as a ripe cherry blossom, and as fresh as a new stalk of bamboo. You are as huggable as a mother panda, and as divine as an origami swan. You have supported me throughout my life, though not so much when I mentioned I was going to become a samurai. I understand that you worry about me, and I now worry about myself, too, judging that I am starting my first battle in two weeks. If I could say one last thing on my deathbed to anyone, I would want to say to you that you have been the best モム ever. I hope you enjoy the presents attached with this letter (a cherry blossom because of your beauty, a bamboo chunk for your freshness, a deed for a panda for being so huggable, and an origami swan for your being so divine), and you are the best mother ever.
Much adoring,
グレーシー

My Seedfolks Chapter
Hello. My name is Lizzie Beth and I am 12 years old and counting. I am an average middle school girl with an average life. I have average hair with an average color of mousy brown that has average split ends here and there. I have one average friend, and average divorced parents. I am in an average public middle school with average teachers and average classes. My face has many average features such as my average nose that has average freckles adorning it, and my average eyes that are an average shade of blue-green. A few average pimples make my face look lovely, and I have an average number of zero wonderful features of my average face. I am average.
Well, I guess you could say I am average if you don’t count that I am the only one except for three others who has a rolling backpack at my school, I am tied with only one or two other people for second-shortest of my entire school, and I can climb anything, anywhere, anytime. Except for if any of my ligaments are sprained or broken or something, but that doesn’t count. So, basically, I am average. Then, one day, something happened that changed my entire life. That thing was a couple months ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
I was walking home from my school on Gibb Street when I noticed something different. It wasn’t the eery-looking houses that crowned the street like a medal. Those were the same. It wasn’t the boarded-up shops and stores that always made me think of movies about kids pretending they aren’t scared and going into the basement. Those were the same. Then I figured out what it was! It was the vacant lot! Or former vacant lot now. There were people all across it planting beans and flowers and tomatoes. Instantly I thought about my great-grandfather. I don’t know why. It’s not like he was dead or anything, it’s just that I don’t see him very often. I thought about how he always had a big garden going out in the back of his backyard. Even though he was in his nineties, he was still as active as ever! He still kept very good care of his garden and I knew I wanted to be just like him. I thought about what I would plant that he taught me about. He planted so many things, and taught me how to plant them all as well. He had giant avocado trees that he would climb himself to get the luscious, bumpy green vegetables. He had short miniature orange trees that beheld the orange, tart fruits that I loved to suck. He had the lovely smelling rosemary that always smelled fresh and like flowers. He had the lime tree that was always so tall, but he let me jump up and try to collect fruit off of all the same. I loved to squirt the juice of these fruit on my fruit as a nice way to fend off browning. Then, of course was the thing I had to try to imitate. His compost pile. Anything that could decompose, break down, or regrow something else, was thrown into the 3-foot high brown pile that he used as fertilizer for his many plants. Then, I knew what I would grow. I would grow his lovely avocado trees and his fresh-smelling rosemary. I would grow them with pride and love for my great-grandpa, who I loved so much. I would treat them how he taught me to treat anything I grow, like my own baby.

Dragasusmaidpire Sith Has Finally Escaped!
After much fear and preparation, the Dragasusmaidpire Sith has finally escaped Mr. Live Scientist’s impromptu and temporary dungeon! This is what happened: Mr. Live Scientist was executing an experiment, and accidentally mixed the genes of a Dragon, a Pegasus, a Mermaid, a Vampire, and a Cat Sith! He was so excited to go home and tell everyone, that he forgot to close the lightning door! There was a storm that night, and lightning struck the lifeless body that had been made by making the genes; it was noted by witnesses that there were sounds and signs of life heard and seen in the laboratory. A very amazing witness, who would like to be known as Grace, says, “Yes, I saw light flashes and roars in the windows and heard the noise coming out of the front of the laboratory. I also heard crashes and fire crackling combined with sounds of a cat such as mews and purrs. A last thing I heard was sounds of fish flopping and splashes.” Grace also notes that she thinks that she saw a figure in the window floating up, as if it was flying. Mr. Live Scientist said after locking up the monster temporarily, “I saw that its wings were like clouds, its fangs were like milk, its tail is slimy and scaly like a fish, and it can turn from a witch to a cat.” Remember not to go near this creature—it can shoot Greek fire that is not extinguishable in water!

I think that one thing I can improve is that I can make the last paragraph longer. My favorite part is the first paragraph because it is the longest and makes me feel the most proud. I enjoyed making the second paragraph of my piece because I got to talk about personal experiences that the author put into his novella.
SEEDFOLKS FINAL EXAM
Three examples of how gardens might benefit and/or heal people are with stress, medical issues, and mentally disturbed. For example, the healing effect of gardens is represented in this quote from “Goodness of Gardening” “The gardening project proposed by the students of Royal College, Colombo at the Mental Institute is reported to be of immense therapeutic benefit to the inmates” (1 of 3). This shows that this hospital knows the healing effects of gardening and has the people in the hospital doing gardening as a way to relieve the mentally disturbed. This also shows that the gardening isn’t just thought to be a good idea, but is proof that gardening has healing/benefiting effects on the gardener patients. Also, another example of gardening helping with the mentally ill, is this quote from “From Seed to Seedfolks”, “The story mentioned that physicians in ancient Egypt prescribed garden walks for mentally ill patients” (1 of 4). This again shows that people know that gardening helps aid the mentally sick. Another example of the healing qualities of gardening is shown in this quote from “Goodness of Gardening” “Different studies show that activities like gardening are associated with health and reduce risk factors for coronary heart disease” (3 of 3). This shows that gardening has been studied and proven to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. This means that gardening isn’t just thought to be a “really good thing”, it has been proven to be. A last example of how gardening can benefit, is relieving stress. Gardening can release stress, and calm one down. An example of this is shown in this quote from “From Seed to Seedfolks” “...after...9/11...scores of people were [waiting in line for the] Brooklyn Botanic Garden...seeking solace and serenity” (3 of 4). This shows that the people were aware of the garden’s stress-relieving and calming traits, and yearned for these things. As you can see, gardens benefit and/or heal many people in many ways.
Two examples of personal experiences Paul Fleischman put into his book, Seedfolks, are his mother and his own experience “being” one of the characters. For one of these examples, he put himself into the characters when forming them. He had an experience where he had to literally start up conversation with people in order for them to not be afraid of him. This helped to create the character Sam, who talks to people and says he is “Sewing up the rips in the neighborhood” (24). Another example of him using personal experiences in his novel is when he talks about in his autobiography literally keeping her alive by putting her into his novel. He came up with the idea of having a garden from his mother, who loved to garden and knew about the healing properties of gardening. As you can see, Paul Fleischman put his own personal experiences into Seedfolks.
I think that Paul Fleischman named his novella Seedfolks for a couple reasons. First, I think he chose it because it means ancestors. I think that he chose this title for this reason because it is the actual meaning of seedfolks. The definition is said in “From Seed to Seedfolks”, “ ’Seedfolks’ is an old term for ancestors” (2 of 4). As Florence says in the novella, Seedfolks, “My father called them our seedfolks, because they were the first of our family here” (65). This could mean in context of the book that the people in the book are seedfolks of others who had gardened before them, or are the first people to immigrate and start the tradition of the garden. For my second and last reason, I think that he used the term “seedfolks” for a reason that relates to what the book is about, more than just the the real meaning of the term. I think that this reason is that the people were planting seeds in the garden, and so it was kind of like a play-on words; creating the term “seedfolks”. As you can see, these reasons are why I think that PAul Fleischman decided to call his book “Seedfolks”.
